Residential Solar PowerResidential solar energy systems and panels are eligible for RECs (Renewable Energy Certificates) also known as Solar Credits for approved customers. Sun Empire offers "point of sale" discounts for residential, grid-connected solar systems. To read more about RECs and what they are click here:
System Size If the PV (photovoltaic system) is 100 kW or less in power and generates no more than 250 mWh's of electricity per year then the system in eligible for REC's, including the initial claim of Solar Credits. If the system is larger than 100 kW and generates more than 250 mWh's of electricity per year then this is considered to be a power station and application needs to be made directly to the Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator for a power station. Solar Credits CalculationSolar systems up to 1.5kW in power are eligible for solar credits, which equal 5 times the standard amount of RECs. i.e. Melbourne (Zone 4) 1.185 x (system power)1.5 kW x (RECs multiplier) 5 x (deeming period) 15 years = 1.185 x 1.5 x 5 x 15 = 133 RECs
RECs can then be sold for a financial incentive which is deemed at a variable rate depending on market fluctuations. i.e. 133 RECs x $43 = a $5719.00 return. For systems then sized over the first 1.5 kW, RECs are calculated at the standard rate of 1:1. For instance a 10 kW solar system calculation works as follows: The first 1.5 kW of the system = 133 RECs The next 8.5 kW of system = 1.185 (Zone 4) x 8.5 kW (power) x 15 (years) = 151 RECs Total RECs = 284 RECs Financial return = i.e. 284 x $43 = $12212.00 The number of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) will vary with the size of the system you install.
